What the F is PEMF?!

BY JESSICA COLLINS FOR HEAT HEALER

It’s been around for more than 70 years, NASA used it to keep astronauts healthy, and it has the potential to help heal bones (seriously!). So what is PEMF therapy and how can you harness its power at home to reduce inflammation, manage pain and boost your metabolism? Read on…

What does PEMF stand for?

PEMF is short for Pulsed Electromagnetic Field - something the Earth emits continuously, stimulating cell repair and health in all living organisms (Humans! Puppies! Green tree frogs!)

PEMF therapy refers to the use of devices which can produce frequencies in the Extremely Low Frequency or Very Low Frequency range of the electromagnetic spectrum, within the same range as the Earth’s natural magnetic frequency.

What are the benefits of PEMF therapy?

Similar to the PEMF that the Earth emits, the frequencies produced by PEMF devices have been observed to assist with muscular and cellular recovery.

PEMF devices were originally used by NASA to maintain astronaut health whilst in orbit. Since then, a growing body of research has shown PEMF therapy to be helpful in everyday life for:

  1. Pain relief - pulsed electromagnetic fields flow deep inside the body to increase circulation and the flow of blood. PEMF also helps increase the level of nitric oxide (NO) in the body - which has not only been shown to improve wound healing, but is a key neurotransmitter involved in reducing the sensation of pain.
  2. Post workout recovery - PEMF therapy helps speed up the healing process by increasing oxygen delivered to muscles and accelerating healing of tendons, ligaments, bones, and other tissue. PEMF can reduce swelling and help remove blood from the site of a bruise, which means faster recovery.
  3. Inflammation - PEMF therapy increases blood flow to the skin and internal organs. It also stimulates the production of growth factors, which aid in the fight against inflammation. In addition, research has shown potential benefits for people with joint disorders, such as early stage osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.

Is there anything PEMF can’t do? (Note: it won’t cook dinner or tidy your bedroom!)

How can I use PEMF therapy at home?

You could try retraining as an astronaut! Or, you could get yourself a portable PEMF device, like Heat Healer’s new Body Belt. PEMF is just one of three Triple Threat Technologies™  used in the device, which also include:

  • Infrared heat - the technology that drives our OG personal sauna blanketsInfrared further targets inflammation and pain by penetrating deep through the skin into muscle and bone
  • Red light therapy - this improves the appearance of skin by stimulating collagen and increasing the growth rate of fibroblasts (a type of cell that contributes to making new connective tissue in our bodies).

There are no other devices commercially available which combine these three absolute powerhouse technologies. Use the Body Belt to target areas of the body most likely to experience pain and inflammation: abdominals, lower back, shoulders, spine and neck, buttocks, knees, thighs, and calves.
