Introduction

It is well known that heat therapy can offer relief from many types of pain. Indeed it has been used throughout history and across cultures for over 2,500 years, dating back to the ancient Greeks and Egyptians who used thermal baths and volcanic hot air caverns to treat muscle spasms and body pains.

The Heat Healer is a modern day solution for natural pain relief that uses safe infrared heat in the same way a typical infrared sauna does, only you experience it in the convenience and privacy of your home.

Chronic pain can originate from many different factors including over exercise, injury, hormonal imbalances, nerve pains, arthritis and so on. While you should always consult your doctor first in deciding how to treat your specific pain, it is worth looking into the science and considering how the Heat Healer might be able to help relieve your pain naturally through infrared heat.

On this page we will detail the various types of pain that can be helped by the Heat Healer, as well as the scientific studies that have been conducted showing the efficacy of different types of heat therapy to treat pain.

How heat therapy helps to relieve pain naturally

Muscle and body pain (including fibromyalgia)

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that is known to cause widespread pain and tenderness throughout the body, often also accompanied by fatigue.

It is estimated that up to nine percent of the population suffers from ongoing muscle and body pain, with between two and five percent specifically affected by the fibromyalgia condition. This includes musician/entertainer Lady Gaga who has been publicly open about the condition and how she manages it through infrared sauna treatments, as she shared with her followers on Instagram.

Lady Gaga's experience with the benefits of infrared sauna treatment is backed up by research conducted out of Kagoshima University Hospital in Japan, which studied the effects of infrared sauna sessions on female fibromyalgia patients and found that fibromyalgia pain was reduced by up to 78% during the study.

Similarly, another study from the School of Medicine at Kagoshima University researched the effects of infrared sauna treatment on patients who suffered leg pain caused by Peripheral Arterial Disease and found that during the study, pain was reduced by up to 70%. Not only that, patients who experienced the infrared sauna treatments were able to significantly improve their exercise ability after six weeks and were able to double the distance walked during a six minute walking test.

Endometriosis pain

Endometriosis is a condition affecting up to 11% of the female population and can cause cramping pain that is often severe. Heat therapy has long been recommended as a natural option to help relieve endometriosis pain, with studies showing that infrared treatments can be particularly effective.

It is also a treatment advocated for by singer, dancer and entertainer Julianne Hough (two time champion of ABC's Dancing With The Stars) who discussed her journey with endometriosis and stated:

“I implemented and incorporated a lot of tools into my lifestyle that encouraged flow through the body. I did a lot of eating that promoted the most efficient digestion... used the infrared sauna for lymphatic flow... you name it.”

Research into the effects of infrared heat treatment on females experiencing primary dysmenorrhea (the medical term for cramping pain of the lower abdomen) by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Taichung Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan showed that the pain experienced during menstruation by participants in the study was reduced from 2.4 to 1.8 days in duration with participants also reporting a significant reduction in the feeling of pain for each day of the study.

Arthritis pain

Arthritis is a medical condition that affects the body's joints and can cause pain that ranges from mild to severe, with other symptoms including joint stiffness, joint tenderness and limited range of joint motion. While there is no cure for arthritis, there are ways you can manage the condition and heat therapy is commonly suggested as one method that may help to alleviate your pain.

Studies has demonstrated that infrared saunas increase blood circulation and make it easier for your body to heal, particularly when repairing inflamed joints. For example, one study conducted out of Saxion University of Applied Sciences in The Netherlands found that:

"In all patients, a clinically relevant improvement was seen during the IR sauna treatment with pain and stiffness decreasing 5 to 24 points on the VAS (pain scale). Pain reduced approximately 40% and 60% and stiffness approximately 50% and 60% for patients with rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, respectively. All patients felt well during and after IR treatment, and 30 min after the end of treatment, 88.2% of patients felt “comfortable” or “very comfortable”."

These studies are further supported by anecdotal experiences of people who suffer from arthritis and enjoy benefits from infrared heat therapy. As an example, author Kat Elton (author of 'A Resilient Life: Learning to thrive, not just survive with rheumatoid arthritis') has written extensively about her experience with arthritis and the relief she has found through using infrared saunas.

She has stated:

"About fifteen years ago my juvenile rheumatoid arthritis was raging and my body was rejecting every medicine I tried. I was in a bad spot and pretty desperate to find something, anything that would help my extreme pain and joint swelling... One possibility kept popping up... I finally decided to go for it, and it was the best money I’ve spent to help my pain, ever - the infrared sauna"

Nerve pain (Neuropathic pain including Sciatic, Allodynia, Trigeminal and other nerve pains)

Nerve pain (otherwise known as neuropathic pain) is caused when nerves in your body send false signals to your brain, triggering a pain response. This can be caused by dysfunctional nerves, either through injury or a problem with the body's central nervous system.

Neuropathy is a chronic pain condition which affects approximately 7% of the population and is particularly prevalent in people who suffer from diabetes, where it is prevalent in 60% of all cases.

Heath therapy is an often recommended natural remedy that can help alleviate nerve pain by:

  • Dilating of your blood vessels, which encourages healing by increasing the flow of oxygen and nutrients;
  • Stretching your soft tissues, which can help to relieve the pressure on your nerve ending; and
  • Stimulating the sensory receptors in your skin, so that your brain focuses less on your nerve pain.

This is further backed up by a study conducted by the Rothbart Pain Management Clinic in New York, which researched the effect of infrared heat therapy on 40 patients suffering from chronic, intractable lower back pain and found that at the conclusion of the study, patients reported a reduction in pain from 6.9/10 to 3/10 on the NRS (the pain scale).
